Germantown red-line

UNITED THEY LEND

Philadelphia Daily News (PA) - Tuesday, June 10, 1986

Keep in mind that many of the locations you are visiting are in former "red-line" areas, areas where banks would not lend money at all, or made it extremely difficult. I include this as a description of the ingenuity of Germantown-and other "disadvantaged" areas of Philadelphia.

Germantown Preservation Efforts early 1900's

This article is a short piece about preserving another old Germantown House.

In the 1830's private schools still existed in the Germantown area. This one is an example of sometimes happens to old buildings (article from 1880's).

Germantown History Pageant

“To Take Part in Pageant of Old Germantown Pageant Will Review Germantown History Women's Organization” Philadelphia Inquirer, published as The Philadelphia Inquirer; Date: 06-02-1922; Volume: 186; Issue: 153; Page: 2;

This article is an interesting thing about the people of Germantown performing their own history in the 1920’s. It is the smallest of overviews but has some interesting quaint imagery associated with it. Also note the location of the pageant: Germantown Cricket Club.

welcome

Hey
Here you will find a series of articles, books, and Urban Archives listings related to your Germantown projects. The majority of the ones here are about troubles that are and have historically faced the Germantown area of Philadelphia, mostly in the last 100 years.

Germantown was once a separate city, but was eventually incorporated into Philadelphia. The area is centered at the intersection of Germantown Ave and Chelten Ave, but extends from approximately Cliveden down to the railroads and the Roosevelt Expressway. It is an "umbrella" neighborhood, there are several sub-neighborhoods within it.
